TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts the potential for light, moderate, and heavy rain—which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds—in various major cities across Indonesia on Saturday.
According to the official BMKG website, citing ANTARA, forecaster Bintari explained that convergence zones have generally formed stretching from the Gulf of Thailand to the South China Sea and from the northern coast of Papua New Guinea to the Pacific Ocean north of the country.
These conditions can enhance the potential for rain cloud development along the areas affected by convergence or confluence. Therefore, cloudy weather with light rain is predicted for most large cities, while the Padang area is predicted to experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning.
Meanwhile, areas forecast to experience light rain include Banda Aceh, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bengkulu, Bandung, Semarang, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, Nabire, and Jayawijaya.
Major cities forecast to experience cloudy conditions today include Pekanbaru, Jakarta, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, and Jayapura.
On Friday, September 11, BMKG said certain waters off the coast of North Sumatra were at risk of experiencing waves up to four meters high due to strong winds from September 11 to 14, 2026.
"Waves reaching four meters in height could occur in the waters west of the Nias Islands, west of the Batu Islands, and east of the Nias Islands," said Dasmian Sulviani, a forecaster at the BMKG Class II Maritime Meteorology Station in Belawan, in Medan on Friday.
He stated that a wind shift occurred over the northern Sumatra region, combined with warm sea-surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, could foster the formation of convective clouds in the Sumbagut area.
