PT ThorCon Power Indonesia (PT TPI) has received permission to continue evaluating the site for the construction of a nuclear power plant (PLTN) on Kelasa Island in the Bangka Belitung Islands. This permit follows the site evaluation approval that PT TPI submitted on January 21, 2025.
Director of Licensing of Installations and Nuclear Material of Bapeten, Wiryono, stated that the evaluation process usually takes up to one year, but it was completed in just 126 working days. According to him, this process was faster than the predetermined schedule.
"This shows Bapeten's commitment to support the acceleration of nuclear reactor construction permits while prioritizing safety and efficiency," said Wiryono in a written statement on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
Indonesia's initiative to build an NPP in Bangka Belitung will place the country among those utilizing nuclear energy as a power source. Then, which countries have NPPs with large capacities?
According to Vanguard News, here is a list of the top 10 countries with the largest operational NPP capacities in the world:
1. United States
The United States leads the world in nuclear energy use with an installed capacity of 97 gigawatts (GW) from 93 commercial reactors in 30 states. These reactors contribute to about 20 percent of the national electricity and over 30 percent of global nuclear energy production.
2. France
France has 56 nuclear reactors with a capacity of 61.3 GW. Almost 70 percent of the country's electricity comes from nuclear energy, the highest percentage in the world, making it the second-largest nuclear electricity producer globally.
3. China
China ranks third in the world's nuclear capacity with a total of 57 GW from 55 operational reactors. The country's Nuclear energy contributes to about 5 percent of the national electricity demand.
4. Japan
Japan operates 33 nuclear reactors with a combined capacity of 31.7 GW. Two additional reactors, Ohma 1 and Shimane 3, are under construction with a total capacity of 2.6 GW.
5. Russia
Russia has 37 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 29.6 GW, contributing to 20 percent of the country's electricity. Nuclear energy is a significant component of the country's energy mix.
6. South Korea
South Korea relies on 27 reactors with a capacity of 31.65 GW, supplying almost 30 percent of the national electricity demand. Nuclear energy in South Korea accounts for 29.6 percent of the country's total electricity generation.
7. Canada
Canada has a capacity of 13.5 GW and mostly uses Canadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors, a locally renowned, efficient, and safe technology. In Ontario, nuclear energy contributes to 15 percent of the national electricity production.
8. Ukraine
Ukraine operates 15 reactors with a total capacity of 13.1 GW spread across four main power plants. Two additional reactors, Khmelnitsky 3 and 4, are currently under construction.
9. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has 15 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 8.9 GW. Fifteen reactors operating at various locations contribute about 15 percent to the country's electricity needs.
10. Spain
Finally, Spain operates seven nuclear reactors with a combined capacity of 7.1 GW. The country's Nuclear energy accounts for about 20 percent of the total national electricity.
