TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Independence Day celebrations are not just synonymous with exciting competitions and flag-hoisting ceremonies but also an array of traditional culinary delights to stave hunger amidst festivities.
Every 17th of August, various traditional Indonesian cuisines and snacks complement the jovial atmosphere, from the majestic tumpeng (cone-shaped rice dish) to snacks that enliven the people's festival in various regions.
The tradition of serving traditional cuisine during independence day celebrations is not just about indulging the palate, but also a symbol of gratitude and a form of togetherness of the community in commemorating the struggles of the heroes of days past.
As reported by Antara, on Friday, August 8, 2025, here is a list of suitable traditional culinary delights to be served during the Indonesian independence day celebrations.
1. Red and White Klepon
Klepon is one of the most popular regional cuisines in Indonesia. Typically served in green, Independence Day will transform this snack into a vibrant red and white color. This snack is a traditional cuisine made from glutinous rice flour filled with palm sugar and coated in coconut flakes.
2. Kerak Telor
The independence day celebration would not be complete without the presence of the popular egg dish, kerak telor. This typical Betawi (Jakarta) culinary delight is never missed in Independence Day festivities. The fragrant aroma of eggs and glutinous rice roasted on charcoal stoves is an attraction for visitors who want to taste this legendary snack.
3. Nasi Tiwul
Tiwul is a traditional food made from cassava that was once a substitute for rice, especially during the struggle for independence. This Javanese specialty food is often served during Independence Day commemoration as a symbol of simplicity and respect for the past history.
4. Ketan Sepit
Ketan sepit is a traditional snack that resembles lemper (glutinous rice roll), but is served uniquely clamped with bamboo blades. This food is usually present during the independence day celebration, often accompanied by other typical snacks such as telok abang.
5. Nasi Tumpeng
Nasi tumpeng (cone-shaped rice) is a dish that is almost always present at every thanksgiving event in Indonesia, including during the commemoration of Independence Day. This rice dish symbolizes gratitude and hope for more achievements to come. The processed rice in tumpeng is usually served in various colors; some are yellow and white rice arranged with red rice, as if depicting the red and white flag.
Tumpeng rice is usually served in yellow, but also often decorated with red and white colors during independence celebrations, accompanied by side dishes such as fried chicken, eggs, tempeh, and chili paste.
