TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet on August 15, 2025, in Alaska. In this agenda, the two leaders will discuss steps to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

However, Trump emphasized that any future peace agreement will likely include the possibility of territorial "some swapping," an issue that has sparked controversy.

“We are going to have a meeting with Russia. We’ll start off with Russia,” he said on Friday, while receiving leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Reasons for Choosing the Location in Alaska

Kremlin's aide, Yuri Ushakov, confirmed the meeting between the two leaders, which had already been scheduled, and referred to Alaska as a 'quite logical' location for the summit or meeting.

On the other hand, Trump provided little information regarding the changes in his efforts over the past few months to reach an agreement to end Russia's invasion. However, he emphasized that a real breakthrough would likely necessitate a territorial exchange agreement.

“It’s very complicated. But we’re going to get some back, and we’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we’ll be talking about that either later or tomorrow,” he stated.

Possible Involvement of the President of Ukraine

The White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska. This location is slated to be the meeting place between Trump and Russian President Putin, scheduled to take place next week. This information was conveyed by a senior U.S. official and three sources familiar with these internal discussions.

“It’s being discussed,” said one of those briefed on the discussions, as quoted by NBC News.

A senior U.S. official and sources privy to the discussions conveyed that there is no confirmed schedule for the visit, and there is uncertainty surrounding President Zelenskyy's attendance at the meeting in Alaska. A high-ranking government official assessed the likelihood of Zelenskyy's presence as very high. He added that many parties are very hopeful that this will happen.

When asked if the U.S. had officially invited Zelenskyy, a senior White House official stated, "The President remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders. Right now, the White House is focusing on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin," when asked if the U.S. had formally invited Zelenskyy to the summit.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government has not responded to this matter.

Initially, the White House stipulated that the Russian President must meet the Ukrainian President before the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could take place. However, Trump later stated that the meeting was no longer a prerequisite.

If Zelenskyy decides to go to Alaska, it is unclear whether he and Putin will meet in the same room, according to an official briefed on the discussions.

An increase in diplomatic activity to seek a way to end the war in Ukraine occurred after Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met Putin in Moscow ahead of the president's deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face new sanctions.

To date, Putin has not accepted the ceasefire, but he has proposed a framework for an agreement that would allow Russia to retain most of the Ukrainian territory. In response, Zelenskyy firmly stated that Ukraine would not surrender its land to invaders.
