TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose heavy consequences on Russia if President Vladimir Putin obstructs peace in Ukraine. Trump also mentioned he might meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky after his meeting with Putin concludes.
As reported by Al Arabiya, Trump did not specify the consequences. However, he has warned of economic sanctions if the meeting between him and Putin in Alaska on Friday does not yield results.
When asked if Russia would face consequences if Putin does not agree to cease the war after the meeting on Friday, Trump replied, "Yes, they will."
When queried if the consequences would involve sanctions or tariffs, Trump told reporters, "I don’t have to say, there will be very severe consequences."
Trump outlined that his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15, 2025, was to set up the following meeting with Zelensky. "If the first one goes okay, we’ll have a quick second one," he said.
"I would like to do it almost immediately, and we’ll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they’d like to have me there."
Trump did not provide a timeframe for the second meeting to be attended by Putin and Zelensky.
European leaders and Zelensky had previously spoken with Trump via phone calls arranged by Germany. The discussions were to establish crucial boundaries ahead of the meeting in Alaska.
Europe disagrees on whether Ukraine should relinquish the territories controlled by Russia. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who hosted the virtual meeting, stated that the principle that borders cannot be changed by force must remain valid.
"If there is no movement on the Russian side in Alaska, then the United States and we Europeans should ... increase the pressure," he said.
"President Trump knows this position, he shares it very extensively."
