TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UK's Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, released an official statement via video on the UK Embassy's Instagram account, @ukinindonesia, on Monday, September 22, 2025. In his message, he affirmed the UK government's decision to recognize Palestine and emphasized the close relationship with Indonesia.

"The cooperation between Indonesia and the UK has been strengthening since President Prabowo and Prime Minister Starmer agreed to establish our strategic partnership last year," said Jermey. He stated that the decision to recognize Palestine is in line with the values of peace and security shared with Indonesia.

He added that this step aims to create a peaceful future for Israel and Palestine. "We will continue to work towards protecting equal rights for the people of Israel and Palestine," said Jermey.

In the same statement, Jermey also emphasized the significance of this recognition for the two-state solution. "Formally recognizing the state of Palestine means safeguarding the continuation of the two-state solution towards permanent peace for the people of Israel and Palestine," he added.

The day before, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this step through a video statement ahead of the UN General Assembly. As reported by Anadolu, Starmer stated, "In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of the peace and the two-state solution."

He emphasized that the current situation of a secure Israel and a viable Palestine has yet to be realized. "So, today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution I state clearly, as prime minister of this great country that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine," he said.

Starmer highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which he described as "truly intolerable." He urged Israel to open its borders for humanitarian aid. "Stop these cruel tactics and let the aid surge in," he stated.

Australia and Canada also announced their official recognition of Palestine on the same day. The announcement came shortly before the UN General Assembly's special session on the war in Gaza on Monday. This meeting is part of a diplomatic initiative led by France and Saudi Arabia aimed at reviving the two-state solution to end the region's long-standing conflict.

Several European countries, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta, also stated that they will join over 145 UN member states that had previously recognized the state of Palestine.
