TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hantavirus has been linked to the deaths of three people aboard an Atlantic cruise ship over the weekend. Of the six affected people, the World Health Organization (WHO) said one hantavirus case was confirmed, while five others were suspected.
Citing the United Nations report on May 3, WHO noted that “detailed investigations” are ongoing, including further laboratory testing. At the same time, medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew.
What is hantavirus?
According to The Guardian, hantavirus is a group of viruses primarily found in rodents, such as mice, rats, and voles, which can be transmitted to humans. At least 38 species have been identified, 24 of which are associated with human disease, though infections are rare.
How does hantavirus spread?
Hantavirus spreads to humans through inhalation of the infected rodents’ airborne particles from urine, droppings, or saliva. In more rare cases, the virus can also be transmitted to humans through rodent bites or scratches.
What are the symptoms of hantavirus?
There are two primary syndromes linked to Hantavirus infection. According to The Independent, the first is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), often transmitted by deer mice and initially presenting with fatigue, fever, and muscle aches before progressing to headaches, dizziness, chills, and abdominal pain. If respiratory symptoms develop, the mortality rate can reach around 38%, as reported by NBC News.
The second is Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), a more severe form that primarily affects the kidneys. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, back and abdominal pain, and in serious cases, kidney failure.
HPS is mainly reported in the Western Hemisphere, while HFRS is more common in Europe and Asia.
How to treat hantavirus infections?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no specific cure for hantavirus infection. Treatment focuses on supportive care, including rest, fluid intake, and symptom relief.
Severe cases may require oxygen therapy or intubation for breathing difficulties. If kidney function is affected, dialysis may be necessary to remove toxins from the blood and maintain fluid balance.
