TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) has carried out additional military strikes on targets in Iran after what Washington described as an Iranian drone attack on a commercial tanker transiting near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement released on Saturday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were launched in response to the latest attack on a Panama-flagged tanker near one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that explosions were heard in the southern Iranian region of Sirik and on Qeshm Island following the strikes.
The latest military action came amid escalating tensions in the Gulf, where Bahrain also reported coming under attack.
Bahrain's Interior Ministry issued an emergency alert instructing residents to head to the nearest safe location after warning sirens sounded across parts of the country.
Bahrain, home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, said Iran launched a drone attack against its territory after the US conducted strikes in southern Iran. The Bahraini government condemned the attack, warning that such actions were undermining ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.
As reported by DW, Bahrain has faced repeated Iranian aerial attacks since the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran intensified earlier this year.
US President Donald Trump defended the latest military operation and warned Tehran against further violating the ceasefire agreement.
In a post on social media following the strikes, Trump accused Iran of breaching the ceasefire once again and said Washington's patience was running out.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist" if the United States is forced to use its full military power, Trump wrote.
"There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started," he added.
The latest exchange has further heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor through which a significant portion of the world's oil supplies passes.
Meanwhile, regional tensions remain elevated on multiple fronts. Hezbollah has rejected a US-brokered security arrangement between Israel and Lebanon, while Israel also carried out a drone strike in southern Lebanon, adding to fears of broader instability across the Middle East.
