TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The United States (US) launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran on Tuesday after accusing Tehran of attacking three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation despite an ongoing ceasefire agreement between the two countries.
According to DW, the strikes targeted multiple military sites, including air defense systems, anti-ship cruise missile positions, and drone launch facilities. Explosions were reported across southern Iran, including on Qeshm Island, in Sirik, and in the port city of Bandar Abbas. No casualties had been reported at the time of publication.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was launched in response to what it described as Iranian attacks on civilian-crewed commercial shipping in the strategic waterway.
"The strikes were intended to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway," CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X.
The command added that Iran's actions were "unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire."
Citing a U.S. official, DW reported that the latest operation was four to five times more intense than the American strikes carried out about a week and a half earlier. US officials described the attacks as a form of "punishment" and indicated that military operations would continue for a period of time.
The latest escalation follows reports that Iran fired on three commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. Washington blamed Tehran for the attacks, though Iranian authorities have not publicly accepted responsibility.
Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the US strikes, accusing Washington of violating the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding that established a 60-day ceasefire last month.
"Iran is issuing a serious warning about the consequences of America's breach of the treaty, and will take decisive measures to protect its interests and national security," the ministry said in a statement carried by state-run IRIB.
The fresh strikes took place while the ceasefire agreement technically remained in effect, raising uncertainty over the future of diplomatic efforts between the two countries.
The developments also coincided with US President Donald Trump's visit to Turkey for the NATO summit, where he met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan as tensions in the Middle East continued to intensify.
