TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian U-21 Women's National Volleyball Team is advancing to the round of 16 of the 2025 U-21 Women's World Championship after FIVB disqualified the Vietnam national team from the tournament.
Vietnam was disqualified after fielding two ineligible players, Dang Thi Hong and Phuong Quynh. "In accordance with Article 13.5.2 of the Event Regulations and 14.4 of the Disciplinary Regulations, the FIVB Disciplinary Panel Sub-Committee has decided that the matches of the Vietnam national team involving the said players are forfeited and the players are disqualified from the championship with immediate effect," FIVB stated on Tuesday.
Under this rule, Vietnam, which initially perched second in pool A, had to give up the position to Serbia, which had been in third place.
Meanwhile, Indonesia, originally in fifth place with a total of five points secured, is guaranteed to take the fourth position, displacing Puerto Rico, who has moved up one place to third position.
In pool A, after Vietnam's disqualification, four teams are confirmed to advance to the round of 16: Argentina, Serbia, Puerto Rico, and Indonesia.
During the previous match, Indonesia was defeated by Argentina in three straight sets 0-3 (23-25, 18-25, 22-25) in the fifth match of pool A at the 2025 Women's U-21 Volleyball World Championship at Jawa Pos Arena, Surabaya, East Java, on Tuesday night.
Coach of the Indonesian U-21 Women's National Volleyball Team, Marcos Sugiyama, praised the performance of the young Srikandi team. "They have proven that hard work and teamwork have placed them at their current level. We lost in five sets in two matches and made it difficult for Argentina, who have many advantages," he said.
In the round of 16, Indonesia is scheduled to face Poland, who holds the runner-up position in pool C.
