TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to visit Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, July 8, as Indonesia and India prepare to formalize a partnership to support the conservation of the UNESCO-listed Hindu temple complex.
The visit forms part of Modi's three-day state visit to Indonesia and follows a series of bilateral agreements signed by the two leaders in Jakarta.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said Prabowo and Modi are scheduled to travel to Yogyakarta on Wednesday morning to visit Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex.
During the visit, the two leaders are expected to witness the signing of a cooperation agreement on the conservation of Prambanan Temple.
"In addition, Prime Minister Modi will also take time to worship at the Prambanan Temple complex," Prasetyo told reporters on Wednesday.
Temple Conservation Partnership
Modi has been in Indonesia since Monday, July 6. On Tuesday, President Prabowo welcomed him in a state ceremony at the Merdeka Palace, where the two leaders held a bilateral meeting with their respective delegations before attending a state luncheon.
The visit resulted in the signing of 16 bilateral agreements covering strategic sectors, including defense, health, energy, culture, technology, and heritage preservation.
According to Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty, Modi's visit to Yogyakarta is directly linked to the two countries' commitment to support the restoration of Prambanan Temple, as outlined in the 2025 Indonesia–India Joint Statement.
"Regarding Yogyakarta, he is visiting because, as stated in the 2025 Joint Statement, the leaders of Indonesia and India agreed that India would support the restoration of Prambanan Temple," Chakravorty said on Friday, July 3.
India Offers Restoration Expertise
Chakravorty said the Indian government has been working with Indonesia's Ministry of Culture, the Indonesian Heritage Agency, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to prepare the restoration project.
He noted that the ASI has extensive experience restoring historic monuments and temple complexes, including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and is currently involved in similar conservation projects in Laos and Vietnam.
According to Chakravorty, an ASI team has already conducted an on-site assessment of Prambanan Temple and completed a project report, which is now under review.
"The ASI team has visited Indonesia, assessed the temple, and prepared a project report that is currently being evaluated. We believe that when the two leaders meet, they will announce the start of the temple restoration work," he said.
He added that the project has the potential to strengthen Yogyakarta's tourism appeal and attract more international visitors, including travelers from India. He also described the restoration as part of broader efforts to develop Indonesia's cultural tourism destinations.
Focus on Restoring Perwara Temples
Culture Minister Fadli Zon said the cooperation will focus on restoring the perwara—the smaller companion temples that surround Prambanan's three main shrines.
"Specifically for Prambanan, India is very interested because this is one of the world's largest Hindu temple complexes, with three main temples and around 200 perwara temples," Fadli said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said Indonesia has completed the restoration of the three principal temples, but only six of the roughly 200 perwara temples have been restored to date.
Fadli said the government has not yet determined the value of the restoration partnership, as further assessments of the remaining perwara structures are still needed. He expressed hope that collaboration with Indian conservation experts would help accelerate the revitalization of the historic temple complex.
