Why over 80,000 Fans Want a World Cup Final Replay

6 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19 has triggered a wave of controversy that extends far beyond the final whistle. While Spain claimed the title through a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time, the aftermath has been dominated by fan protests and official disciplinary inquiries.

As reported by Euronews, the aftermath has split into two distinct narratives: anger from supporters over the officiating and scrutiny from governing authorities over on-field clashes.

Fan Petition Claims Referee Controversy

Dissatisfaction among Argentine supporters materialized online shortly after the match. A Change.org petition launched by fan Gisela Sánchez has gathered more than 82,000 signatures calling on FIFA to void the result and order a rematch.

The petition targets Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, accusing him of a biased performance. "The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match's outcome," Sánchez wrote in the appeal. "We ask FIFA to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final."

However, public petitions hold no legal or sporting weight over official FIFA outcomes. Under tournament regulations, matches are replayed only under extreme administrative circumstances, such as proven technical errors by officials, which is a rarity illustrated by a 2006 World Cup qualifier between Uzbekistan and Bahrain.

Similar fan petitions, including one signed by over 200,000 French fans after the 2022 final in Qatar, yielded no regulatory changes.

In Argentina, tens of thousands of supporters instead took to the streets across major cities to celebrate their squad’s campaign to the final despite missing out on a fourth star.

A Disjointed Final and On-Field Tension

According to match details compiled by Yahoo Sports, Argentina struggled offensively throughout regulation, failing to record a single shot on target. Referee Vincic blew his whistle 46 times for fouls during the physical encounter, penalizing Argentina 25 times. The defending champions were reduced to 10 men in the 93rd minute when midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card following a challenge on Pau Cubarsí.

Tensions escalated immediately after Torres scored in extra time and blew over entirely at the final whistle. Yahoo Sports detailed several altercations involving Argentine players. Leandro Paredes was sent off after the match for confronting Eric Garcia and Gavi, while Nahuel Molina was cited for an altercation with Rodri.

FIFA Investigation and Counter-Backlash

In response to these incidents, FIFA designated a disciplinary prosecutor to review confrontations involving several team members, including Paredes, Molina, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala.

The review also examines post-match conduct during the trophy presentation, as well as an earlier political banner displayed by Argentina players regarding the Falkland Islands during the semi-finals.

The incidents drew sharp criticism from international broadcasters. "It's a disgrace," former England international Gary Neville said on ITV. "I love the competitiveness of the Argentines, fighting and scrapping for their lives, Messi has propped them up, but it's been a disgrace the last few games."

Online backlash also spawned counter-petitions. According to Yahoo Sports, a separate Change.org petition demanding Argentina's exclusion from future international competitions surpassed 23 million signatures before being closed.

Addressing the media after the match, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni tried to diffuse the surrounding tension. "We are gracious in victory, and we must be so in defeat as well," Scaloni stated.
