TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Civil Society Network (Jamsaki) has filed complaints against two lawyers representing former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim, asking the courts and the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) to investigate their conduct following the verdict in Nadiem's Chromebook procurement corruption case.
The lawyers named in the complaints are Dody S. Abdulkadir and Ari Yusuf Amir.
Civil Society Group Seeks Sanctions
Jamsaki spokesperson Umar Yuli Abbas said the group has asked the Central Jakarta District Court to issue a reprimand against the two lawyers, while urging the Jakarta High Court to revoke their licenses to practice law.
The group has also requested that Peradi summon the lawyers and impose disciplinary sanctions for alleged violations of the legal profession's code of ethics.
"At Peradi, we are requesting that the lawyers be summoned and subjected to ethical sanctions for the alleged violations," Umar said on Monday, July 7.
Complaint Centers on Courtroom Remarks
According to Umar, the complaints stem from remarks made by Nadiem's legal team after judges delivered the verdict in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops.
The statement at issue was: "Why the hurry, Your Honor? Afraid, are you? Uh-oh, this is serious. It is our right to speak."
Jamsaki alleges the remark was made by Ari Yusuf Amir, who objected to the panel of judges not giving his client an opportunity to state his position after the verdict was read.
During the June 30 hearing, the judges did not directly ask Nadiem whether he accepted the ruling. However, presiding judge Purwanto S. Abdullah informed all parties of their right to pursue legal remedies.
"Regarding the decision we have issued, the public prosecutor, the defense counsel, and the defendant all have the same right to pursue legal action if they disagree," Purwanto said during the hearing.
Nadiem's Lawyers Also Report Judges
Separately, Nadiem's legal team has filed complaints against four of the five judges who tried and sentenced the former minister to 10 years in prison.
The judges named in the complaint are Purwanto S. Abdullah, Eryusman, Sunoto, and Mardiantos.
The four judges have been reported to Indonesia's Judicial Commission over alleged violations of judicial ethics and professional standards.
"We have officially filed reports with the Judicial Commission regarding the case we handled, namely the case of Nadiem Anwar Makarim at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court. Our reports are supported by clear evidence," Ari said at the Judicial Commission on Monday, July 6.
