TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 13 Indonesian shuttlers are set to compete in the Australian Open 2025 badminton tournament, a BWF Super 500 event taking place at Quaycentre, Olympic Boulevard, from November 18 to 23.
Initially, more Indonesian players were slated to participate, but several have withdrawn in recent weeks. Most notably, women’s singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung decided to skip the tournament following her runner-up finish at the Kumamoto Masters 2025.
Indonesian women’s singles coach Imam Tohari explained that Gregoria’s withdrawal was based on a careful assessment of her physical condition.
“Based on monitoring and evaluation, Gregoria still requires a longer recovery period before she can compete again,” Imam said, according to a statement from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Monday.
He added that the short recovery time, combined with the long journey from Japan to Australia, could jeopardize her physical fitness.
Earlier, two men’s singles players, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, as well as men’s doubles pair Bagas Maulana and Leo Rolly Carnando, had also withdrawn for personal reasons.
Ginting chose to skip the Australian Open to accompany his wife, who is expecting a child. Mohammad Zaki had academic exams to attend, while Leo and Bagas needed to focus on preparation for the 2025 SEA Games. Additionally, non-national training center player Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo will not compete, according to the official BWF website.
