TEMPO.CO, JakartaThere’s something timeless about gazing at the night sky, even if it costs you a few hours of sleep. This August, Asia’s skies are set to host one of nature’s most breathtaking performances, best known as the Perseid meteor shower in the wee hours of August 12 and 13.

As the night rolls in, the streaks of light will dance across the darkness, painting a spectacle you won’t want to miss. But before you grab your blanket and camera, here’s your guide to catching this celestial masterpiece in all its glory.

What is the Perseid Meteor Shower?

The Perseid meteor shower is a dramatic outer space spectacle that occurs annually when Earth’s atmosphere collides with a trail of debris shed by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. This incredible nature event will get us to see shooting stars as the tiny comet shards strike at speeds of up to 59 kilometers per second.

During the Perseid meteor shower, the short-lived strike occasionally creates fireballs where you can witness more intense extra-bright bursts than the average shooting star. With a promise of majestic fireball sightings, the Perseid meteor shower of 2025 evidently becomes one of the most anticipated celestial displays.

However, amidst the rave about these magical vistas, Space.com revealed that a feature of a waning gibbous moon will reportedly hinder the sightings of the brightest meteors. Though under the right conditions, you will still be up for a spellbinding celestial spectacle.

When is the Best Time to See the Perseid Meteor Shower?

According to a meteor expert from the American Meteor Society, Robert Lunsford, “You can watch for long Perseid earthgrazers as soon as it gets dark until the moon begins to interfere.” The connoisseur also told Space.com that for most folks, the Perseid meteor shower will only last about an hour.

TimeOut added that the best times to see the Perseid meteor shower in Singapore will fall between August 12 and 13 2025, from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., as the sky is at its darkest, resulting in the most intense view of the cosmic spectacle.

Most viewers of the Perseid meteor shower can catch its majestic sightings with their bare eyes. Under the condition of clear skies, folks don’t have to prepare any special equipment. However, if the weather is a hindrance, stargazers often take a telescope or binoculars to make the most of their experiences.

Where is the Best Place to Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower in Singapore?

A string of open area holdings in Singapore, like the Marina Barrage, East Coast Park or Upper Seletar Reservoir Park are some of the best places to see the Perseid Meteor Shower. For most cases, an elevated spot with wide and unobstructed views will give you the clearest sight of all. So, choose your vantage point carefully.

As August’s night skies prepare to stage the Perseid meteor shower, all that’s left is for you to find the perfect spot, wrap yourself in the quiet of the predawn hours, and let the universe put on its show. And, if you have enough time to explore more, head out to plan some fun things to do in Singapore this month.
