TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Budi Santoso said Indonesia will continue to broaden its export market for locally manufactured products. The government is not only aiming at European and American markets but is also targeting Latin America and Africa.
"We are not only relying on European and American countries, but also Latin American countries. After that, we will try to enter Africa," Budi said at Balai Kartini, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
In efforts to expand to Africa, Budi noted that the Indonesian government has begun negotiations, but the region prefers regional agreements. This, he explained, would take more time as it requires approval from member countries, so Indonesia is pursuing bilateral talks first.
"Recently, South Africa expressed readiness for bilateral negotiations. We want to explore market potential everywhere, because our industry and capacity are substantial," he said.
The Indonesian government recently signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Peru to increase market access to Latin America. Negotiations began in 2023 and involved delegations from both sides.
Access to the Peruvian market is considered a gateway for Indonesian products to reach the broader Latin American region, supported by similar cooperation already in place with Chile.
"This is the second CEPA, after the agreement with Chile, which we have been implementing for quite some time," said Director General of International Trade Negotiations Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono during a press conference at the Ministry of Trade Auditorium in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
According to Djatmiko, the agreement with Peru will facilitate import and export access for trade goods from both countries. For now, the cooperation does not cover investment or capital flows. "We have agreed to negotiate trade in goods first, then later investment," he said.
Politically and economically, Djatmiko described Indonesia’s relations with Peru as excellent. The two countries are open to each other and share a relatively similar economic orientation. He projected that the CEPA would create a better framework for Indonesia’s export and import environment.
