BGN: Free Nutritious Meal Program Absorbs Rp8.2 Trillion from State Budget

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Dadan Hindayana, stated that the realization of the state budget for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has reached Rp8.2 trillion.

On Tuesday, President Prabowo Subianto summoned Dadan to the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta to discuss the progress of national priority programs, including MBG.

“The state budget for MBG has absorbed Rp8.2 trillion so far, focusing on nutritional interventions,” Dadan said in a written statement quoted on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. He added that the physical development of nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG) is fully funded by partner organizations.

Currently, MBG beneficiaries are served by 5,103 SPPGs across Indonesia. According to Dadan, the program now benefits more than 15 million people.

“The beneficiaries have exceeded 15 million and, God willing, will approach 20 million,” he said.

These 5,103 SPPGs are spread across 38 provinces, 502 regencies, and 4,770 districts. BGN collaborates with the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Kadin, the Indonesian Association of Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs (APJI), and various local businesses.

In addition to the operational units, thousands of other SPPGs are in the preparation stage. Dadan estimated that each SPPG requires a budget of Rp1.5–2 billion.

“So, the money circulating in the community is almost Rp28 trillion, and that does not come from the state budget but from partner contributions,” he said.

Dadan claimed that the MBG program has stimulated the business sector. He pointed to many restaurants, cafes, and hotels that have repurposed their kitchens to meet the program’s nutritional needs. If a restaurant previously served around 500 guests, the same establishment, now functioning as an SPPG, serves 3,500 portions.

“Food is delivered to schools or homes for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers,” he said.

To date, 17,000 prospective SPPGs are undergoing verification, with 200 to 300 checks carried out daily. Dadan emphasized that BGN continues to tighten standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure food quality for student beneficiaries, from selecting raw materials to minimizing cooking and preparation time, and ensuring timely delivery.

“This includes delivering food to schools and ensuring it is not stored there for too long, keeping the time under four hours,” he said.
