TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) in Indonesia, Commissioner General Eddy Hartono, claimed that there is recruitment of terrorism networks through online games. Eddy said this is a new trend currently receiving attention from BNPT.
"We note a pattern of several terrorism networks in Indonesia recruiting young people through social media, including online games, and we have followed up on this," Eddy said in a written statement quoted on Sunday, November 16, 2025.
According to Eddy, many young people are currently being exposed to radical ideologies unconsciously. He stated that BNPT is currently focusing on strengthening counter-radicalization programs in the digital world.
One of these programs is the Duta Damai (Peace Ambassador) program. According to him, this program for young people encourages the distribution of narratives of peace to prevent ideologies that incite violence.
Ali Rashid Alnuamini, the Chair of The International Steering Board of Hedayah, who also discussed with the Head of BNPT, stated that terrorists communicate with young people through games and social media. "Violent ideology groups used to recruit through direct communication or social media, but now terrorist groups recruit combatants through online games," said Ali.
According to Ali, children are easier to recruit through online games because they only think they are playing. However, he said, there is a hidden agenda prepared by various violent ideology groups.
