Copenhagen Brings Back Eco-Friendly Tourist Reward Program

6 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Copenhagen has relaunched CopenPay, a reward program for tourists supporting environmentally friendly activities. This year, 90 attractions will participate, offering free experiences to tourists who choose sustainable travel.

The capital's tourism board, Wonderful Copenhagen, piloted the CopenPay program in the summer of 2024. It involved 20 partners, including museums and farms, offering complimentary experiences to environmentally-conscious tourists, such as collecting trash and using public transportation. In return, tourists received free food, drinks, and even kayak rentals.

Last year, CopenPay ran for four weeks from July 15 to August 11, 2024. The program resulted in a 29 percent increase in bicycle rentals, encouraged waste collection, and 98 percent of participating tourists recommended the program to others.

Duration and Rewards of CopenPay

Considering the program's positive impact, this year, CopenPay's duration has been extended to nine weeks, from June 17 to August 17, 2025. The number of participating tourist attractions has also increased to 90 partners, including the National Museum, Kronborg Castle, the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhill, City Park, and others.

This year, the environmentally-friendly actions required for tourists to receive rewards are not significantly different from the previous year. Instead of flying, tourists are required to arrive in Copenhagen by train. After that, tourists can enjoy various facilities such as free bike rentals, yoga sessions, guided tours, and discounted admission to attractions like the National Gallery of Denmark and City Park. This also includes extending the length of stay to four days or more.

Søren Tegen Pedersen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, said that tourism should be a force for positive change, not a burden on the environment. Fortunately, Tourists are also willing to contribute positively to the destinations they visit.

“Rather than bringing more tourists to the city, the goal with CopenPay is to nudge our visitors and raise their awareness about traveling in a more sustainable way - exploring Copenhagen more responsibly while being rewarded with unique experiences,” he said, as quoted from Travel Pulse.

The Happiest City in the World

Aside from the CopenPay initiative, another reason to visit Copenhagen is its title as the happiest city in the world. As reported by TimeOut recently, the Happy City Index chose Copenhagen as the world's happiest city. This title was awarded based on its citizens, governance, environment, economy, health, and mobility.

Copenhagen scored the highest in the index, due to its commitment to education and innovation, strong culture of learning, dedication to research and development, as well as active and participatory democracy. One reason why the citizens of Copenhagen are so cheerful is the concept of "hygge," which involves setting aside time from daily busyness to be with loved ones or alone to relax and enjoy a calmer pleasure in life.
