TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death on Monday, November 17, 2025, by a court in Dhaka. Hasina, who fled to India following a violent crackdown on student-led protests last year, remains in the country as the verdict was read.

According to Anadolu, the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka found Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity committed during last year’s mass demonstrations against her government. The verdict was delivered in absentia under heavy security.

The tribunal said Hasina was responsible for the atrocities committed during the unrest, calling her the “supreme commander” behind the crimes.

All the conditions of being a case of crimes against humanity were prove,” the judges said while reading the 453-page ruling led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The court noted the crimes were carried out without her direct knowledge but under her leadership.

Also sentenced to death was former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Hasina and her aides have 30 days to appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

Hasina fled to India on August 5 last year at the height of a mass uprising that resulted in more than 1,400 deaths. The interim government later filed five charges against Hasina and several associates, including crimes against humanity.

The student-led protests ultimately toppled Hasina’s Awami League government, which had ruled Bangladesh for more than 15 years. The court also ordered the seizure of all properties belonging to Hasina and Kamal.

Former national police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year prison sentence after admitting his involvement.

Attorney General Mohammad Tajul Islam told reporters the verdict was delivered through a transparent process and that victims of last year’s unrest would be compensated using seized assets from Hasina and Kamal.

“The justice and verdict were presented as a transparent process, and anyone across the world could come and check.”

Asked about enforcing the ruling while Hasina remains in India, Islam said the government may use its extradition agreement with India or seek Interpol’s assistance to bring her back.

Family members of victims were present in court, including Mir Snigdho, whose twin brother, protest coordinator Mir Mugdho, was killed during the uprising. He said families would not be satisfied until Hasina is returned from India and the sentence is carried out.

Ahead of the verdict, Hasina dismissed the charges as politically motivated. Speaking to supporters, she said the trial was a “farce” and accused Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government, of trying to destroy her party.

She added that she would continue working for the Bangladeshi people and that “any injustice will be held accountable.”

“We lost control of the situation, but we cannot categorize what happened as a planned attack on citizens,” Hasina said, as quoted by Reuters.
