First Eid al-Fitr Prayer at IKN National Mosque Canceled; Authority Explains Why

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The planned 2025 Eid al-Fitr prayer at the IKN National Mosque has been canceled. Troy Pantouw, Special Staff to the Head of the IKN Authority for Public Communication, explained that it was due to the ongoing mosque construction to date.

"Considering the technical factors and accessibility that still require refinement, the implementation of the 2025 Eid al-Fitr Prayer at the IKN National Mosque cannot be carried out," Troy said in a written statement received by Tempo on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

He explained that the IKN National Mosque is currently in the construction phase, and there are safety concerns. He specifically mentioned the construction of the roof structure and the minaret, or mosque tower.

He stated that the average construction progress has reached only 54.3 percent. "In addition, access to the mosque location still needs to be improved to accommodate visitor and congregant vehicles, to maximize the safety and comfort of the congregation," he said.

Furthermore, he and the related ministry have extended the construction contract. They aim to complete the IKN National Mosque construction by the fourth quarter of this year. Therefore, the mosque can be used as a place of worship.

"Based on information from the Ministry of Public Works, the completion target of the IKN National Mosque construction is expected to be achieved in the fourth quarter of 2025. The construction contract has been extended," he said.

The plan to hold the 2025 Eid al-Fitr Prayer at the IKN National Mosque was made at the end of last year. Hariqo Wibawa Satria, Spokesperson for the Presidential Communication Office, said the national mosque in IKN can be used for the 2025 Eid Prayer on 1 Syawal 1446 Hijri, with space for 5,580 people. The mosque is designed to hold up to 60,000 people.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti made similar comments. She said the construction progress of the IKN National Mosque had reached 45 percent at that time.

"I asked that by March (2025), entering Ramadan, it should be completed and ready for the Eid al-Fitr prayer," Diana said while inspecting the construction of the IKN National Mosque in East Kalimantan, on Sunday, December 1, 2024, as stated in the official statement.

At that time, the mosque in IKN was in the first phase of construction. This phase includes a main building with four floors. Hariqo explained the four floors: two mezzanine floors and two multipurpose terrace floors, which also serve as a parking area.

Built on an area of 32,125 square meters, the mosque in IKN is planned to have a total building and plaza area of 60,173 square meters and a Minaret area of 427 square meters.

In addition, there will be commercial buildings covering an area of 2,212 square meters (two floors) and support buildings covering an area of square meters (one floor).

The national mosque will have parking facilities for visitors. This includes four special VVIP parking spaces, one space for people with disabilities, five bus parking spaces, and 64 parking spaces on the LG floor in the terrace area.
