Gov't Predicts 72,300 Tons of Waste During 2025 Eid Homecoming, Surpassing Last Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry anticipates a rise in waste accumulation during the 2025 Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the increase is expected to last for up to ten days.  

"The waste projection during the homecoming period for seven to ten days is around 72,300 tons," Hanif said when met at Rest Area KM 57A, Karawang, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. He explained that this estimate is based on the Transportation Ministry's projection of Eid homecoming travelers, which this year reaches 146 million people.  

Although this year’s Eid homecoming travelers are fewer than the 193.6 million recorded in 2024, the projected waste accumulation is higher than last year's 58 thousand tons. Hanif suggested that the increase may be due to the longer Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2025 compared to 2024.  

Based on calculations, if 146 million people generate 72,300 tons of waste over seven days, each individual is expected to produce 70.74 grams of waste per day. If the accumulation occurs over ten days, the daily waste production per person would be 49.52 grams.  

To address this issue, the Minister of Environment and Forestry has issued Circular Letter Number 02 of 2025 concerning Waste Control during the Eid al-Fitr 1446 H holiday. Hanif said the directive is aimed at local governments to ensure proper waste management during the homecoming period.  

According to Hanif, waste reduction and management must remain a priority. "Of course, we provide flexibility to all local governments according to their cultural landscape to carry out these two aforementioned things," he said.  

He also urged Eid Homecoming travelers to bring tumblers, food containers, or other reusable food and beverage packaging as a simple way to help reduce waste accumulation.
