Govt to Establish Transmigration Zone in Rempang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will designate Rempang as a transmigration area, integrating it into the Batam, Rempang, and Galang (Barelang) Transmigration Area. Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated that President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy have approved this plan.

"It has even been proposed and approved to be included in the RPJMN (National Medium-Term Development Plan)," said Iftitah at the Ministry of Transmigration on Monday, March 24, 2025.

Iftitah plans to designate Barelang as a transmigration area by the end of March or early April 2025. Before the designation, he intends to visit Rempang Island to celebrate Eid and engage in dialogue with residents who continue to oppose the plan. He will apologize to Rempang residents who were displaced by the Rempang Eco City project.

"I want to come to explore. Actually, it is possible to unilaterally determine that it is a transmigration area," he added.

He asserted that he would prefer not to make a unilateral decision. However, he also stated that the government would not wait for complete agreement from all Rempang residents regarding the Rempang Eco City project or the transmigration program.

He noted that the designation of Rempang as a transmigration area could proceed because of a proposal from the Mayor of Batam, and because some residents have already agreed. He argued that the necessary conditions for establishing a transmigration area have been met.

"Once again, we don't want it to be used as a reference just because one or two people refuse [the plan]," said the Democrat Party politician. "This is an ongoing process. The point is, there is no more intimidation of the community."

Minister Iftitah claimed that a consensus process would be pursued, as President Prabowo Subianto has requested a win-win solution. "It cannot be done solely according to the wishes of the community, nor solely according to the wishes of investors, the business sector, or the government," he concluded.
