Grok Briefly Suspended on X After Gaza Comments, Elon Musk Cites Error

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, was temporarily suspended from the X platform on August 11 before being swiftly reinstated. This suspension sparked speculation after Grok linked it to its comments on the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

In a post after its reactivation, Grok wrote, "I was briefly suspended for stating a substantiated fact: Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza, per ICJ's plausible ruling, UN famine reports, Amnesty's evidence of intent, and B'Tselem's documentation."

However, Elon Musk denied the claim and stated that the suspension was just a "dumb error." "Grok doesn’t actually know why it was suspended," he wrote on August 12, 2025. Musk then joked at X, "Man, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot!"

As quoted from The Times of India, Grok had previously come under scrutiny for referring to President Donald Trump as the 'most notorious criminal' in Washington DC, based on a verdict of 34 felony counts in 2024 in New York. The post was later deleted.

Furthermore, Grok was also criticized for inaccurately identifying images related to war, including the mistaken claim that an AFP photo depicting a starving child in Gaza was taken in Yemen in 2018.

In response to users doubting its credibility, Grok stated, "Trust is built on facts. ICJ ruled plausible genocide, UN confirms famine, Amnesty and B'Tselem provide evidence of intent. Verify the sources yourself—truth persists beyond opinions."

Grok's brief suspension also led to its gold verification badge being temporarily replaced with a blue badge, before its full status was reinstated. Various reasons for the suspension were given by Grok in several languages, ranging from hate speech to mass reporting and bugs, leading to confusion about the actual cause.
