India Shuts Down 32 Airports Until May 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 32 airports in India's northern and western regions have been closed for civil aviation operations until May 15. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced the closure on Saturday morning, May 10, 2025.

As reported by NDTV, the decision is a result of the military conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been ongoing since India's attack on May 7 against terrorist camps and subsequent firing by Pakistan along the border areas.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and relevant aviation authorities have issued a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports in India's northern and western regions for all civil aviation operations.

In DGCA's statement, the closure is effective from May 9, 2025, until May 14, 2025 (or until 05:29 Indian Standard Time on May 15, 2025), due to operational reasons.

Closure of 32 Airports

Airports closed to civil aviation include Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, and Jammu.

Other airports such as Jaisalmer, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), and Leh. Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai are also among the closed airports, as stated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in the release.

Before this, at least 24 airports were ordered to be closed for civil aviation operations until May 10.

Meanwhile, the AAI has extended the temporary closure of 25 Air Traffic Services (ATS) route segments in the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Region (FIR) due to operational reasons. Because of this closure, the regulator has advised airlines and aviation operators to plan alternative routes. It added, the temporary closure will be managed in coordination with relevant air traffic control units to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.

On April 30, India closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines as part of retaliatory actions following the terror attack on Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people. On April 24, Pakistan responded by closing its airspace to Indian airlines.

The closure of airports in northern and western India due to the conflict with Pakistan has led to the cancellation of more than 400 flights per day, according to sources cited by the Indian Express. The largest airline in the country, IndiGo, reported 165 flight cancellations per day due to airport closures.

An armed conflict erupted between India and Pakistan after India's strike on nine terror locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under Operation Sindoor in the early hours of Wednesday. This strike was in retaliation for the massacre in Pahalgam, a region in Kashmir under India.
