TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono received a courtesy visit from the Ambassador of the UK to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The meeting followed on from the Indonesian President's visit to the UK last November.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen the new strategic partnership between Indonesia and the UK through cooperation in several priority areas. These areas include economic growth, health, human resources development, defense and cyber, climate change, energy transition, and sustainable development. The discussion also included Indonesia's application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Sugiono conveyed the national policy direction to modernize Indonesia's fishing fleet. This policy is part of efforts to strengthen food security and accelerate economic growth in the maritime sector. In response, the UK Ambassador is willing to assist Indonesia in enhancing the capabilities of the Indonesian marine industry.
In addition to economic cooperation, the meeting also discussed the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges. Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's position in supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the 1967 borders, and the importance of respecting international law in responding to the issue of Ukraine.
Sugiono also underlined the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) decision that emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Gaza. The ceasefire is crucial to support the smooth flow of humanitarian aid and initiate reconstruction. Indonesia hopes the UK can help create the necessary atmosphere for Israel to adhere to the ceasefire agreement.
