Indonesia Moves to Deepen ICT Ties with Russia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is pushing for stronger cooperation with Russia in information technology and communication. This cooperation includes the development of 5G networks, broadband, digital ecosystems, e-commerce, postal services, and the latest digital technologies.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria stated this during an official visit by Deputy Minister for Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, Andrey Zarenin, in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

"We are opening up several possibilities for cooperation that we can enhance, including telecommunications, digital ecosystems, e-commerce, postal services, and emerging technologies," Nezar said in a written statement on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

He added that Indonesia wants to expand international connectivity, including internet bandwidth and data transmission. According to Nezar, Russia could be a potential partner in realizing a fast and affordable internet in Indonesia.

"If we work together, we can reduce the cost of the internet, because we need internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps at a very low cost, like in Russia. So, in my opinion, this is a very good initiative and hopefully we can create collaboration to follow up on this initiative," he said.

Nezar also highlighted previous cooperation, such as digital talent training for civil servants and public lectures at Indonesian universities. He suggested expanded cooperation in media and digital skills development in the future.

"We hope that in this meeting there will be an initiative to create a kind of Memorandum of Understanding between Indonesia and Russia to reaffirm the commitment to digital and media development," he said.

In response, Russian Deputy Minister Andrey Zarenin expressed readiness to strengthen the synergy of digital transformation between the two countries. He proposed a technology exchange, sharing best practices, and the establishment of a Joint Indonesia-Russia Commission for Information Technology and Digital Society.

"With optimism, I see the future of direct Indonesia-Russia relations and will have broader opportunities," said Zarenin.

He also opened up the opportunity for cooperation with Russian technology companies related to backbone fiber optic infrastructure solutions and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. "I am also confident that we will start important agreements in the field of information technology and media at the national and company levels," he said.
