TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is planning to open facilities to convert used cooking oil and oil palm into jet fuel (avtur) as part of the country's shift to alternative energy sources.
Prabowo said this while inaugurating an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
Jet fuel can now be derived from oil palm, which Indonesia has in abundance, he said. "In the future, avtur can also be made from used cooking oil," Prabowo added.
"In the near future, we will open processing facilities and refineries for this purpose. We will invest heavily in this sector," he said.
Previously, in a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, Prabowo said the war-induced crisis the world is now facing presents an opportunity for Indonesia to speed up its shift towards new and renewable energy (EBT) for national security.
The president is promoting energy self-sufficiency by developing biofuels from cassava and corn as alternatives to diesel and gasoline. This step aims to reduce fuel imports by leveraging domestic natural resources.
"And we can use coal; we can produce diesel and gasoline from coal, from cassava, from corn," he said.
Prabowo said Indonesia has a strong economic foundation and energy security to face the global crisis, adding that the country is relatively safe from the impact of the global energy crisis due to having independent energy sources.
"Upon review, it turns out that our economy is quite sturdy," Prabowo said.
