Indonesia's Rice Absorption Reaches 1.87mn Tons, the Highest in History, Says Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman announced that, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), rice absorption by the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) from January to May 2025 reached 1.87 million tons.

He called this the highest figure in history.

"Typically, over the last five years, rice absorption was only between 1 and 1.2 million tons annually. But, thank God, this year, the domestic rice absorption without imports has reached 1.87 million tons," said Amran.

Amran revealed the data during a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) office in Jakarta on Monday, May 5, 2025.

He also noted that the rice absorption number is still rising every hour, later updating it to 1.88 million tons.

The Minister presented data on rice procurement by Bulog for the past ten years. In 2015, rice absorption from January to May stood at 1.12 million tons, but it declined over time, reaching only 653 thousand tons the previous year.

Amran also shared data on rice production from 1969, the year Bulog was founded, up until 2025, showing monthly rice stock levels for the last 56 years.

In 2025, rice stock increased from 1.79 million tons in January to 3.51 million tons by May.

Amran stressed that this rice absorption figure excludes imports.

"It’s important that the public understands this clearly," he said.  "There are attempts to combine imports with domestic production," but he did not identify those responsible.

On the quality of the rice absorbed by Bulog, priced at Rp6,500 per kilogram, Amran assured that strict quality standards were being upheld.

He emphasized that the rice procurement process continues with a strong focus on quality.

"We will not allow any damaged rice to interfere with the procurement process," he concluded. "Quality is non-negotiable."
