Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto received a visit from the 34th batch of the Indonesian National Police Staff and High Leadership College (Sespimti Polri), Monday, May 19, 2025. Doc. Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, stated that 3,595 Indonesian citizens who self-reported have been assessed. To date, no indications of them being victims of human trafficking have been found.

"The assessment process was conducted using assessment tools developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with various international organizations, including the IOM, and in accordance with national regulations and laws related to human trafficking," according to a written statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh received in Jakarta on Saturday, as reported by Antara.

According to the Embassy, most of the Indonesian citizens did not have passports and were subject to overstay fines. After obtaining temporary travel documents and waivers from Cambodian Immigration, 743 people were scheduled to return home between February 15 and March 4, 2026, while 225 others have returned independently since January 30, 2026.

Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto confirmed that the departure of the Indonesian citizens was facilitated by the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, all the way to the departure gate at the airport. "The Indonesian Embassy will ensure that upon their arrival in Jakarta, they will undergo further investigations by the relevant parties," Santo said. He hopes the level of involvement of Indonesian citizens in online fraud activities can be determined and legal action taken.

The Indonesian Embassy also emphasized that it will increase coordination with relevant agencies in Indonesia, including law enforcement officials, so that problematic Indonesian citizens whose return has been facilitated will undergo investigations upon arrival in Jakarta.

The Indonesian Embassy stated that the Cambodian Government has expressed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia in handling cybercrime and increasing raids against online fraud syndicates. With these steps, the number of Indonesian citizens reporting to the Indonesian Embassy is expected to continue to increase.

To anticipate this situation, the Indonesian Embassy will continue to improve the process of registering Indonesian citizens, verifying and assessing cases, and issuing passport permits (SPLP) for those without passports. The Embassy is also strengthening coordination with Cambodian authorities and relevant agencies in Indonesia, including law enforcement officials.
