Indonesian Indie Developer 'Announces 1998: The Toll Keeper Story', a Narrative Survival Game

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indie game developer GameChanger Studio from Tangerang has announced its upcoming title 1998: The Toll Keeper Story, a game inspired by one of the most difficult periods in Indonesia’s modern history. The release date is still to be confirmed.

GameChanger Studio is best known for the My Lovely trilogy (My Lovely Daughter, My Lovely Wife, and My Lovely Empress), which are available across various platforms including PC and consoles. Departing from fantasy-driven stories, the studio now presents a game rooted in real-world events and emotional realism.

CEO Riris explained that the game is not just about physical survival but also about enduring emotional and psychological challenges.

"This is a portrayal of how ordinary people struggle to survive amid uncertain security, food shortages, fear, and confusion," she said in an official statement.

Classified as a narrative simulation with choice-based mechanics, 1998: The Toll Keeper Story will be available on PC via Steam. The story follows Dewi, a toll gate operator who is experiencing her first pregnancy while political instability and civil unrest grip the fictional country of Janapa, which is going through a major financial crisis.

Dewi is forced to make morally complex decisions to protect her unborn child and her family. Players will encounter difficult scenarios that test both Dewi’s values and her commitment to those she loves. The game also portrays the daily lives and anxieties of Janapa’s citizens who interact with her toll booth.
