ITB to Manage 129 Hectares of Urban Forest in IKN

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) will manage the 129.69-hectare Rimba Kota forest block within the core area of Indonesia's Nusantara Capital City (IKN). The plan is currently being finalized through a collaboration between ITB and the IKN Authority.

"The ITB forest in IKN is expected to be not only a green space but also a center for innovation and learning that strengthens the spirit of higher education's tridharma," said Endah Sulistyawati, Head of the Joint Task Force for the Planning of Rimba Kota IKN, on the ITB website, Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

The ITB task force involves professors from various disciplines, including the School of Life Sciences and Technology; the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development; the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology; and the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.

Up to now, the task force team has conducted a series of initial studies, including aerial surveys and environmental mapping. As a result, it has been determined that this eucalyptus-dominated area possesses rich biodiversity, serving as home to 42 plant species and 40 bird species, including endemic and protected species.

The ITB Rimba Kota forest area is designed to function as a knowledge center for the utilization of biological resources and green technology. Various strategic programs have been prepared, such as serving as a studio and field study location for students and international partners, facilitating forest transformation and smart forest development, and providing community service through agroforestry demonstration plots, appropriate technology training, and expertise support for sustainable development.

In addition, the ITB task force is exploring collaborations with local partners, such as vocational high schools in Penajam Paser Utara for smart forest development, as well as pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) for agroforestry and aquaculture programs. Coordination is also being carried out with the IKN Deputy Authority to present strategic plans.

"ITB also opens up opportunities for broad collaboration with various parties to support research infrastructure and tree planting for forest restoration in IKN," said Endah. ITB's involvement serves as tangible support for IKN's vision as a "Forest City," a concept of a green, sustainable city with a primary focus on conservation.
