TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Earth Heroes team from the Indonesia University of Education, or UPI Bandung, has compiled an e-book on environmental education titled Live Green with Low Carbon. After winning a gold medal at the Korea International Women's Invention Exposition (KIWIE) 2025 in the education category on May 24, the team aims to make the book available for elementary school children.

The book was created by four female recipients of scholarships from the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP) who are currently studying for their master's degrees at UPI Bandung. They are Umi Sayidatus Zakiya, a Master's in Science Education student; Nurul Anggraini, studying English Education; Ulfiyani, specializing in Primary Education; and Cendy Catherine Manopo, focusing on Curriculum Development.

The book, which has been under development since December 2024, has been introduced to students at Bandung's Centeh Elementary School. "We have conducted three stages of testing in accordance with the methodology for creating e-books or learning materials, including practical validation and expert assessment," said Nurul to Tempo on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

Nurul and her team view the gold medal from the Korea International Women's Invention Exposition as international recognition that their work can be used as educational material for sustainable living. At the KIWIE, over 500 women inventors and small to medium-sized entrepreneurs from more than 30 countries gathered to share information and experiences, learn about new technological trends, and promote the latest innovations.

With this recognition, the Earth Heroes team is exploring potential collaborations with several non-governmental organizations to promote the use of the book among students. According to Nurul, there have been suggestions to collaborate with the Education Agency or the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education. "However, before it can be used as an educational resource, we need to translate the entire text into Indonesian," Nurul explained.

Nurul stated that the e-book is currently in English. In addition to text and images, the e-book also includes audio features and video links. Nurul mentioned that the book is currently intended for the general student population and does not yet include groups such as the visually impaired.

Spanning 56 pages, Live Green with Low Carbon e-book is divided into six chapters: carbon footprint, air pollution, greenhouse effect, energy conservation, eco-friendly transportation, and recycling. In the introductory section, readers will be introduced to climate change. "We have focused this book on education about low-carbon lifestyles," added Nurul.

According to Nurul, the environmental education material is not just informational but also includes interactive activities, worksheets, reflections, and a weekly schedule for environmental conservation activities, all in a simple format. For instance, activities include unplugging chargers, turning off lights, and reducing food waste.
