TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - NBA basketball megastar LeBron James is set to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and is now a free agent, opening up opportunities for negotiations with other clubs.
The NBA website reported on Wednesday that the 41-year-old basketball player has spoken with the club regarding his desire to leave for the 2026-2027 season.
In several mainstream media reports in the United States, information regarding James's desire to leave the Lakers was also confirmed by his agent, Rich Paul.
This decision will end his eight-season stay with the Lakers, which began in 2018.
Reports had suggested the Lakers wanted to retain the veteran. However, he has chosen to seek new challenges as he continues his 24th NBA season, which would be the longest in league history.
During his time with the team, the small forward won the 2019-2020 NBA championship and earned the NBA Finals MVP award.
There is currently no confirmation regarding his next club. Despite this, several teams, including the Golden State Warriors, have been linked to the four-time NBA champion amid the opening of the free agency market.
In the 2025-2026 season, LeBron James averaged 20.9 points per game (ppg), 7.2 assists per game (apg), and 6.1 rebounds per game (rpg) in 60 games.
