An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the southern region of Sukabumi to Tasikmalaya on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 08:32 AM local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake originated from the southern waters of the Indonesian Ocean.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 7.66 degrees South Latitude and 107.15 degrees East Longitude. Head of BMKG for Tangerang Region II, Hartanto, stated in a written release on Wednesday, "It is located in the sea at a distance of 82 kilometers southwest of Bandung Regency." The earthquake was classified as shallow with a depth of 37 kilometers due to the activity of an active undersea fault.
Based on reports from the public, the earthquake was felt in the Sukabumi region, such as Tegalbuleud, and in Cianjur Regency, in areas including Campaka, Naringgul, Pagelaran, and Garut. The earthquake had an intensity level of III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, with tangible tremors felt indoors as if a truck were passing by.
In addition, residents in Pangalengan, Pelabuhan Ratu, Tasikmalaya, and Cianjur also felt the earthquake with an intensity level between II and III on the MMI scale. The vibrations were felt by several people, causing light hanging objects to sway noticeably indoors.
According to the BMKG, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake. As of 08:52 AM local time, there have been no subsequent earthquake activities. The BMKG advises the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified rumors.
