M5.8 Earthquake Strikes North Sulawesi's Bitung

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeast of Bitung, North Sulawesi, on Saturday morning, April 4, 2026. The tremor was recorded at approximately 08:35 a.m.  local time.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was located at 1.18 degrees north latitude and 126.18 degrees east longitude, roughly 121 kilometers southeast of Bitung, at a depth of 29 kilometers.

"This information prioritizes speed, so the processing results remain preliminary and may shift as more data becomes available," the BMKG stated via its official X account on Saturday morning.

As of now, there have been no official reports regarding casualties or structural damage. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation across the affected regions.

The tremor follows a powerful 7.6-magnitude tectonic earthquake that rocked the sea southeast of Bitung on Thursday, April 2, 2026. Updated data placed that epicenter at 1.25 degrees north latitude and 126.25 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 62 kilometers.

That earlier tremor was felt intensely for 10 to 20 seconds in Bitung and its surrounding areas, as well as in Ternate, North Maluku, where it triggered widespread panic and sent residents rushing into the streets.

The BMKG previously recorded a significant series of aftershocks following Thursday's 7.6-magnitude mainshock. By noon on that same day, the agency reported at least 93 aftershocks of varying intensities.

BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani noted that these aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 2.8 to 5.8. "With magnitudes between 2.8 and 5.8, seven of these tremors were significantly felt," Faisal explained during a virtual earthquake response coordination meeting at the time.
