Mount Semeru Erupts on Eid al-Fitr Morning, Remains on High Alert

TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Mount Semeru erupted again in the early hours of Monday, March 31, 2025. The eruption, which occurred before the dawn call to prayer on Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijriah, precisely at 04.14 AM WIB (Western Indonesia Time), was accompanied by a plume of ash reaching a height of 800 meters.

Mount Semeru Observation Post (PGA) officer Sigit Rian Alfian said that the eruptive ash column was white to gray in color and thick in intensity towards the northeast. "The eruption lasted for 156 seconds," he said in a written statement shortly after the incident.

The Semeru PGA, located on Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, recorded several seismic activities in the past 24 hours. There were 54 times of eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-23 millimeters (mm) and durations of 70-225 seconds. Then, one avalanche earthquake with an amplitude of 8 mm and a duration of 110 seconds. There were also 14 earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 mm and durations of 43-96 seconds.

Other records include two harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-6 mm lasting 116-128 seconds and two volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-20 mm lasting 13-18 seconds. The rest were three distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 8-15 mm and durations of 13-20 seconds.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said Mount Semeru is at level II or Alert status. "The community is advised not to engage in any activities in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak," said Sigit.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay away from the area within a 3-kilometer radius of the Semeru Volcano crater due to the danger of pyroclastic flows. Outside the most vulnerable area, there is also a warning for people around Mount Semeru to be cautious in areas 500 meters from the edge of the Besuk Kobokan River. This is due to the risk of expanding hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the peak.
