TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Semarang Legal Aid Institute (LBH) reported that dozens of people are suffering from shortness of breath after police fired tear gas into the crowd of protesters in front of Pati Regent's office.
LBH Semarang public attorney Muhammad Safaly said that based on field observations, around 40 people, including women and children, were affected.
"Up to 3:30 p.m., based on the information we received, 40 people had been taken to the hospital for medical treatment," Safaly said when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
LBH Semarang continues to monitor the situation and has opened a post to gather the complaints of victims of police violence and to give legal assistance to those in need.
"Please wait for the updates on the reports," he said.
Thousands Demand Pati Regent to Resign
The wave of protest in Pati was prompted by several unjust policies imposed by Regent Sudewo, including a 250 percent raise for Rural and Urban Land and Building Tax (PBB-P2).
Despite having been revoked, residents were already upset with previous statements made by the Gerindra Party politician. Today, the people of Pati held a major protest in front of the Pati Regent's office demanding Sudewo's resignation.
Chief of Public Relations of the Central Java Regional Police Senior Commissioner Artanto said the protest was initially peaceful this morning, but some started to provoke the crowd, and a riot erupted near midday.
A vehicle belonging to the Police's Security and Maintenance Division (Propam) was set ablaze, and some threw bottles of mineral water and rotten vegetables at Regent Sudewo. These actions led to chaotic situations that required the police to act.
"There are 34 victims who have been taken to the hospital for medical treatment," Artanto said, but said that no fatalities were recorded thus far, based on police verification on site.
