TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PERPLEXITY has made an offer to Google to acquire the Chrome browser for $34.5 billion, equivalent to around Rp558 trillion. Citing Techcrunch, the offer includes a commitment to maintain the underlying engine of Chrome, Chromium, and open source within it.
"Perplexity’s offer includes a promise to invest $3 billion into the open source project," cited from Techcrunch on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
According to the report, Perplexity also promises not to alter the basic settings or default of Chrome users. The AI-based technology company also wants Google to be the search engine option instead of using Perplexity's AI power.
Although the company is interested in buying Chrome, Perplexity has just launched its own AI-based browser called Comet. Another business strategy from the company is their supposed merger plan with TikTok.
As known, this offer for Chrome arises as the U.S. Department of Justice has proposed that Google sell the browser after being accused of monopolizing online search. However, Google has not agreed to this and will fight the court's decision.
"(A) Perplexity spokesperson believes the court will soon set terms for remedies, perhaps later this month," Techcrunch reported.
Furthermore, Google is also fighting a federal court decision stating that the company monopolizes the digital advertising sector. Regarding the offer for Chrome from Perplexity, Google has not yet commented.
