TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is considering a proposal for each state-owned enterprise (SOEs) to provide funding for research. He received the proposal at the Science, Technology, and Industry Convention in Jakarta over the weekend.
During his speech at the event attended by 2,000 lecturers, Prabowo said he appreciates the inputs. "I am very grateful, I briefly read earlier, I heard many very good proposals, very reasonable, and we will follow up on them soon," he said at the Jakarta Convention Center, Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Prabowo mentioned that one of the proposals is for state-owned industries to allocate a portion of their profits for research and innovation. "This is a good proposal," said the Chair of the Gerindra Party.
However, Prabowo stated that the government needs to assess whether state-owned enterprises have profits to be allocated for research. He mentioned that state-owned enterprises have started to make profits in the past year.
Prabowo said that he is streamlining and organizing state-owned enterprises. Out of around a thousand existing entities, he stated that the number of state-owned enterprises will be reduced to around 250 companies. One of the aims is to reduce operational costs.
In addition, Prabowo also mentioned receiving proposals for doctoral scholarships both in state and private universities. "This is a very good proposal, and we will follow it up," he said.
The Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (STIC) attended by Prabowo took place from Friday to Sunday, June 26-28, 2026. The President was present at the opening and closing of the event, which invited 2,600 lecturers, including professors, deans, and rectors.
On the previous Friday, during the opening of STIC 2026, Prabowo delivered a nearly five-hour presentation to the academicians. Today, on Sunday, he delivered a speech for almost four hours in front of the attending lecturers.
The forum titled 'National Discussion' attended by Prabowo was part of the Science, Technology, and Industry Convention of Indonesia. This event was organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. STIC is an initiative of President Prabowo, first held at the Bandung Institute of Technology in August 2025.
