TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa acknowledged that his decision to reshuffle officials at the Ministry of Finance was one of the factors that led to his dismissal as finance minister. The decision had previously been linked to reports of internal conflict within the ministry that ultimately led to his removal.
Purbaya made the statement after the formal handover ceremony with newly appointed Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara at the Ministry of Finance office in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
“Some of it was because of the decision to reshuffle ministry officials, yes, partly,” Purbaya said.
He said, however, that a cabinet reshuffle was the prerogative of President Prabowo Subianto. Purbaya said he did not know of any other reasons for his replacement.
According to Purbaya, the policies he pursued during his year in office were in line with the programs set by the president.
“So there were no other policies that triggered my dismissal. No, because all of our policies followed the president’s policies,” he said.
Purbaya had reshuffled around 400 senior officials at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The changes affected positions across directorates general and public service agencies under the ministry.
Purbaya said the decrees on the official changes had already been issued but could still be revised by the new finance minister.
Four days after the reshuffle, on Monday afternoon, September 14, President Prabowo Subianto unexpectedly dismissed Purbaya as finance minister. Earlier that day, Purbaya had still attended a meeting with the Regional Representative Council’s (DPD) Commission IV in Senayan, Jakarta.
Prabowo appointed then-Deputy Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara to replace Purbaya.
Purbaya was appointed finance minister on September 8, 2025, replacing Sri Mulyani Indrawati. His dismissal came just days short of completing one year in office.
