TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have pledged to strengthen cooperation, just days before Putin's planned summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, as reported by Pyongyang's state media on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), cited by CNA, Putin and Kim spoke by phone in a "warm comradely atmosphere" on Tuesday. They affirmed "their will to strengthen cooperation in the future."
KCNA also stated that Putin expressed gratitude for "the self-sacrificing spirit displayed by service personnel of the Korean People's Army in liberating Kursk," referencing North Korea's participation in Russia's war against Ukraine.
In response, Kim pledged that North Korea would "fully support all measures to be taken by the Russian leadership in the future, too."
During his meeting with Trump in Alaska on Friday, August 15, 2025, the U.S. president is expected to press Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
Russia and North Korea have been strengthening their ties in recent years, with Pyongyang providing troops and weapons for Russia's military operations in Ukraine.
The two nations signed a joint defense pact last year during a visit by Putin to the reclusive state.
North Korea officially confirmed in April that it had deployed a contingent of its troops to the frontlines in Ukraine to fight alongside Russian forces.
