Stations of the Cross Mark Good Friday Services at Jakarta Cathedral

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Good Friday service at the Jakarta Cathedral Church on April 3, 2026, began with the Stations of the Cross tableau. In front of the congregation, a group of performers reenacted Jesus Christ's journey of suffering, death, and burial.

The Stations of the Cross drama began with a song depicting the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. It continued until Christ was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate, who was a Roman imperial officer. The drama, which took place in front of the Jakarta Cathedral Church's main entrance, depicted the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.

Susyana Suwadi, the spokesperson for the Jakarta Cathedral Church, stated that the Stations of the Cross tableau is a form of devotion and reflection for Catholics, especially on the crucifixion and suffering of Jesus Christ to atone for the sins of humankind. "Certainly, it can invite all believers to join in the journey of faith and imbue the meaning of the day of Christ's suffering and death," said Susyana at the location on Friday, April 3, 2026.

Susyana explained that this year's musical drama and dance for the Stations of the Cross was directed by Yogi Tanowo. The production of tableau also involved actors and dancers who are active members of the church.

The Jakarta Cathedral Church prepared 5,000 seats for the congregation who wish to participate in the Holy Week services. This weekend, the Cathedral will hold services including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil.

To ensure the security for the series of Easter celebrations in 2026, the Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police deployed 4,500 personnel. These personnel were stationed at various churches, crowded areas, and worship centers during Easter.

Chief of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Grand Commissioner Budi Hermanto stated that the police had deployed thousands of personnel to ensure safety during the celebrations. "We have deployed 4,500 personnel to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of all Easter services," said Budi in a written statement on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Budi explained that the police had implemented a layered security plan, which included sterilizing places of worship, managing traffic flow, and conducting regular patrols around the church. He emphasized that these measures were intended to enable Christians to worship safely and comfortably.
