TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese Coast Guard vessels have sailed through the Senkaku Islands, which are administered by Japan, amidst escalating tensions between the two countries. The relationship between China and Japan has grown tense following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments about Taiwan.
The Chinese Coast Guard stated in a release on Sunday, November 16, 2025, as reported by Al Jazeera, that they were patrolling around the Senkaku Islands. Beijing claims these islands as its own and refers to them as the Diaoyu Islands.
"China Coast Guard vessel 1307 formation conducted patrols within the territorial waters of the Diaoyu Islands. This was a lawful patrol operation conducted by the China Coast Guard to uphold its rights and interests," the statement read.
The deployment of forces around the disputed islands comes amid increased tensions in China following the nationalist remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Last week, she hinted that Japan would defend Taiwan if attacked by China.
China, claiming Taiwan as an integral part of its territory, responded angrily. Its Consul General in Osaka stated that "the protruding dirty head must be broken."
This statement later prompted a formal diplomatic complaint from Tokyo. China then summoned the Japanese ambassador and issued a travel warning on Friday advising its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
According to CNA, three Chinese airlines said on Saturday that tickets to Japan could be refunded or changed free of charge.
Taiwan had once been the stronghold of the powerful nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek, a close ally of the United States who fled to Taiwan after being defeated by communist forces on the Chinese mainland in 1949. However, the island has developed its own democratic culture and political system and has been resentful of Beijing's military threats.
In Taiwan, the Ministry of Defense stated on Sunday morning that it had detected 30 Chinese military aircraft operating around the island and seven navy ships in the past 24 hours. On Saturday night, the Ministry of Defense said that China had conducted another "joint combat patrol" to "disrupt our airspace and waters."
