TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, that three Thai sailors aboard Mayuree Naree have lost their lives after the cargo ship was hit by a missile in the Strait of Hormuz.
"It is with deep sorrow that I must confirm that three Thai sailors who remained aboard the Thai cargo ship Mayuree Naree, which was struck by a missile in the Strait of Hormuz and subsequently set ablaze, have died," Foreign Minister Phuangketkeow told reporters.
Phuangketkeow expressed his gratitude to all parties who helped rescue the 20 other crew members who managed to leave the burning ship and were brought home by Omani naval personnel in cooperation with the Royal Thai Navy.
He described the rescue as part of international diplomatic cooperation between Thailand and several other countries.
According to CNA, Sihasak said he would depart for Oman in mid-April to seek help in coordinating with Iran to secure safe passage for nine Thai ships still stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
On March 11, the cargo ship Mayuree Naree was struck by a missile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The missile hit the engine room, where three sailors were at the time of the attack. They, along with the rest of the crew, were unable to escape.
The ship drifted towards the Iranian coast and ran aground near an Iranian island. Iranian rescue workers recovered the bodies of three Thai nationals who died when the ship was attacked.
