TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed last Friday that Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed to a deal over TikTok’s operations in the United States, paving the way for the video-sharing platform to be managed by a consortium of American investors.
Trump’s announcement was consistent with a statement from TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, which indicated it would ensure the platform remained available to U.S. users through a newly established TikTok US entity.
However, the full details of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.
The deal came after months of negotiations between Washington and Beijing to salvage TikTok’s presence in the U.S. The app was banned in January 2025 on national security grounds but the enforcement of the ban was repeatedly delayed amid backlash from users and content creators.
TikTok, currently the world’s most downloaded app, has an estimated 136–137 million users in the U.S.
A week earlier, Trump suggested on his Truth Social platform that a settlement had been reached and that the buyers would soon be revealed.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the consortium includes Oracle, Silver Lake, and Andreessen Horowitz, who together will hold an 80 percent stake in TikTok US. Chinese shareholders are expected to retain the remaining shares.
The new entity’s board of directors will be dominated by Americans, with one seat directly appointed by the U.S. government.
Trump later noted on Truth Social that his call with Xi Jinping had gone smoothly and that they planned to speak again.
“The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval, and both look forward to meeting at APEC!”
In a separate statement, TikTok expressed gratitude to both leaders for securing the app’s future in the U.S. ByteDance stressed that it would comply with applicable regulations to ensure TikTok continues to serve American users under TikTok US.
