Trump Sets Another 90-Day Delay on China Tariff Deadline

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has once again delayed imposing increased import tariffs on China for another 90 days, until November 10, 2025. The delay was announced amid ongoing negotiations between the world's two largest economies.

"All other elements of the Agreement will remain the same," said Trump on the Truth Social platform on Monday, August 11. In the statement, Trump mentioned that the U.S. would continue talks with China to resolve trade disputes and strengthen economic relations.

As reported by NBC News, official Chinese media published a joint statement that the Chinese government will take necessary steps to suspend or remove non-tariff barriers.

U.S.-China Tariff War

This is the second delay since Trump took office. In February 2025, he imposed a 10 percent tariff on all imports from China, to which they responded with higher tariffs. In early April, Trump increased the tariff to 34 percent. China responded with an 84 percent tariff on American goods. Shortly after, Trump raised the tariff to a total of 145 percent, while China set it at 125 percent, creating trade embargo-like conditions.

Efforts to ease tensions began in early May when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Geneva. Both parties agreed to reduce tariffs to 30 percent for Chinese goods and 10 percent for U.S. goods for 90 days.

However, at the end of May, Trump accused China of breaching the agreement by slowing down the shipment of rare earths, a strategic raw material for the technology and defense industry.

A Tug-of-War of Interests

A follow-up meeting was then held in mid-June in London, attended by Bessent, Greer, and Trade Minister Howard Lutnick. The discussions produced positive outcomes, but a full agreement between the U.S. and China has yet to be reached.

According to Al Jazeera, if this deadline is missed, China's import tariffs will return to the April level, which is 145 percent. The high tariffs since the beginning of the year have led to price increases in the United States. Some of the costs are borne by companies, some by consumers.

However, Trump dismissed inflation concerns and praised tens of billions of dollars in state revenue from tariffs. "We’ll see what happens. They’ve been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with [China’s] President Xi [Jinping] and myself," said Trump.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that China hopes the U.S. will adhere to the important consensus reached in phone talks between the two heads of state and strive for positive results based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit.
