TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump will attend a virtual meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. This was disclosed by a White House official to Anadolu on Tuesday.
The confirmation was provided by an official who preferred to remain anonymous a day after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he had invited Trump, Zelensky, and other European officials to attend the meeting today.
The meeting is being held two days before Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday, August 15, 2025.
German Government Spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that the virtual meeting will discuss further steps to pressure Russia and prepare for possible peace negotiations, including territorial claims and security guarantees.
The summit will be attended by heads of state and government from Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, the UK, and Ukraine, as well as the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, the NATO Secretary General, and the Vice President of the U.S., JD Vance.
Meanwhile, the White House has lowered expectations for the Trump-Putin meeting by referring to it as a "listening exercise" for Trump to gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing conflict.
"Only one party that's involved in this war is going to be present, and so this is for the president to go and to get a more firm and better understanding of how we can hopefully bring this war to an end," said White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
At the summit on Friday, the White House announced that the meeting would be held in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska.
Zelensky is not scheduled to attend the meeting.
The Alaska summit will be the first direct meeting between U.S. and Russian presidents since the meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin in Geneva in 2021.
It will also be the first visit by a Russian president to Alaska since the territory was sold by the Russian Empire to the U.S. in 1867.
EU Urges Trump Not to Abandon Ukraine
Elsewhere, as reported by Sky News, 26 leaders of the European Union issued a joint statement warning that Ukraine must have a role in determining its future, after Trump said Zelensky would not be part of his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
The European leaders reiterated their call for Zelensky to be invited, welcoming Trump's efforts "towards ending Russia’s war of aggression." They cautioned, "The people of Ukraine must have the freedom to decide their future."
The statement was signed by every EU member state except Hungary, which has often had hostile relations with Ukraine and the EU, and is a close ally of Putin in Europe.
Zelensky Rejects Putin's 'Proposal'
Zelensky stated that Putin wants the remainder of Donetsk—and essentially the entire Donbas—as part of a ceasefire plan.
Kyiv controls about 30 percent, or 9,000 square kilometers, of Donetsk, located in eastern Ukraine, said Zelenskyy.
Donetsk shares a border with Russia and forms the region known as Donbas, along with the neighboring Luhansk region, which is 99 percent controlled by Moscow.
Zelensky stated that Ukraine will reject the proposal.
He explained that the move would eliminate Kyiv's defensive line and pave the way for Moscow to launch further attacks.
