TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two people were killed in an explosion on Monday morning at a steel factory in the Pittsburgh area, Pennsylvania, United States. Officials said on Monday night, August 11, 2025, that one previously missing victim has been confirmed dead.
“It is with profound sadness that I share with you that the U. S. Steel colleague who had been unaccounted for has been located and confirmed deceased, following an extensive search and rescue effort," said David Burritt, the company's CEO, in a statement quoted from NBC News.
Officials said at least 10 people were injured in the explosion. Five individuals were in critical but stable condition on Monday night, according to Allegheny County officials. Five people were taken to hospitals, treated, and released.
Officials mentioned that some were injured and treated at the scene, but the number was not specified.
One of the deceased victims is Timothy Quinn. As reported by CNN, his sister Trisha Quinn said the 39-year-old victim was a father of three and a caregiver for his elderly mother.
Local officials did not inform the family about Quinn's death until 4 p.m., several hours after the explosion. "I was calling every hospital in Pittsburgh," said Trisha, adding that she eventually traveled to the scene of the explosion to seek answers.
"My dad worked at the steel mill for 42 years," Trisha said. "He would be disgusted at the situation right now."
Investigators are trying to determine the origin and cause of the explosion. "Obviously this is a tragedy we want to understand," said Scott Buckiso, Executive Vice President and Chief Manufacturing Officer for U.S. Steel. The explosion occurred just before 11 a.m. between two batteries at Clairton Coke Works.
The U.S. Steel facility southeast of Pittsburgh produces millions of tons of commercial coke per year, a type of fuel used in steel production.
The county health department also has a presence at the plant to monitor air quality, the spokesperson said in a statement.
So far, air quality monitors have not detected levels of potentially hazardous gases and particulates that exceed federal standards, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato told reporters.
However, residents living within a mile radius of the plant are advised to stay indoors, close all windows, and set HVAC systems to recirculate.
Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi said Monday was a sad day for his city and the steel factory workers. "These guys come to work and they put their gear on and they go to work to make a living for their family, not knowing if they’re going to make it home or not," he told NBC affiliate WPXI of Pittsburgh.
