Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on Moscow, Pressuring Kremlin

3 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine launched another large-scale drone attack on Moscow and several other Russian regions on Tuesday, escalating pressure on the Kremlin as Kyiv intensifies long-range strikes aimed at disrupting Russia's military infrastructure and forcing an end to the war.

Russian authorities said air defense systems intercepted or destroyed 419 drones across the country, including more than 60 drones approaching Moscow, making it one of the largest Ukrainian drone assaults on Russian territory in recent weeks.

Ukraine also targeted the Dubna Satellite Communications Centre, one of Russia's largest satellite communication facilities located about 500 kilometers north of the Ukrainian border. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the facility supports Russian military intelligence gathering and the coordination of forces fighting in Ukraine.

As reported by CNN, the Dubna facility has now reportedly been struck for the second time in just over a week as Kyiv expands long-range drone operations intended to weaken Russia's military capabilities. Ukrainian officials said repeated attacks on Moscow and St. Petersburg have become possible after operators systematically targeted Russian radar installations in the Bryansk border region, creating what they described as "an open corridor" through parts of Russia's air defense network.

According to the Russian-appointed governor of the Moscow region, a drone struck an administrative building in Dubna, although no casualties were reported at the site.

Russian officials, however, said the attack caused civilian casualties elsewhere. Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said a drone crashed into a residential home in Yegoryevsk, southeast of the capital, trapping residents beneath the rubble. Rescue workers pulled two adults and two children from the building, but a six-month-old baby later died on the way to hospital.

Another civilian fatality was reported in Russia's western Tver region, where local authorities said a 61-year-old woman was killed after debris from a downed Ukrainian drone struck a summer house.

As reported by The New York Times, the latest assault adds to mounting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has faced increasingly frequent drone attacks on Moscow while Ukraine continues targeting Russian oil refineries, fuel infrastructure, and military facilities.

The drone campaign has coincided with Ukraine's broader effort to disrupt Russian fuel supplies and isolate occupied Crimea, while exposing Russian civilians more directly to the consequences of the war.

Russian aviation authorities temporarily imposed flight restrictions at several of Moscow's major airports overnight before later restoring normal operations.

Ukraine has steadily expanded its long-range drone capabilities, allowing larger swarms of unmanned aircraft to penetrate deep into Russian territory. Zelensky has described the strategy as "long-range sanctions" designed to pressure Moscow into ending the conflict.

Last week, the Ukrainian leader also announced a 40-day military operation intended to "compel" Russia to end the war.

Meanwhile, Russia has continued advancing its offensive in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow seeks full control of the Donetsk region. Although Russian progress slowed earlier this year, Moscow has recently regained momentum while maintaining heavy bombardments against Ukrainian defensive positions.

President Vladimir Putin has dismissed suggestions that Ukraine's expanding drone campaign will alter Russia's military objectives. In remarks broadcast by Russian state media, he said Moscow would continue pursuing what he described as the "final liberation of Donbas and Novorossiya," referring to territories in eastern and southern Ukraine claimed by the Kremlin.

Putin acknowledged that Ukrainian strikes on fuel infrastructure had created shortages but insisted the disruptions remained manageable.

"We are currently seeing certain shortages, although they are not critical," he said.

He also argued that Russian retaliatory strikes inside Ukraine remained more destructive than Ukraine's attacks on Russian territory.

The Kremlin condemned Tuesday's drone assault, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov accusing Kyiv of targeting civilians.

"Civilians are suffering, children are dying — this is the result of the actions of the Kyiv regime," Peskov said.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Russian military operations killed 1,272 civilians and injured 6,871 others in Ukrainian government-controlled territory during the six months ending May 31, underscoring the continuing humanitarian toll as the war enters its fifth year.
